Don't just clean, give home a 'healthy' scrubbing

It's time for spring cleaning, but this year instead of just sprucing up the home, why not make it a healthy living space that can help reduce the symptoms of the upcoming pollen-filled months, and eliminate the "wheezes and sneezes" for the entire family?
Healthy space designer Robin Wilson, president of Robin Wilson Home, who is the ambassador for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and has a line of hypoallergenic bedding products at Bed, Bath & Beyond, offers these tips for taking spring cleaning to the next level:
• In the bathroom, get rid of your vinyl shower curtain because it holds mold more easily and off gases. Use a nylon curtain instead. Use non-toxic cleansers, and always lower the toilet seat when flushing to ensure that spraying particles do not land near or on your towels, toothbrushes or soaps.

County deeds, mortgages down for first quarter

Wood County Recorder Julie Baumgardner has released a report covering the transactions of the recorder's office for the first quarter, Jan. 1 through March 31.
For this quarter, 1,019 deeds were recorded, compared to 1,167 deeds being recorded for the same quarter last year.
Also, 787 mortgages, with a valuation of $331.6 million were recorded for the quarter, compared to 1,434 mortgages, with a valuation of $244.4 million being recorded for the same quarter last year.
Numerous other documents were recorded, in addition to the above, for a total of 3,678 documents being recorded for this quarter, compared to 5,362 documents being recorded for the same quarter in 2013.
Baumgardner paid $194,001 into the county for this quarter, compared to $295,310 for the same quarter last year.     
Of that total, $73,932 was paid directly into the county general fund, compared with $112,873 for the same quarter last year.

Homeowners wanting to shake their homes out of hibernation can look no further than their own front and backyards.
After a record-setting winter, homeowners can take easy steps to wake up and dress up the outside of their houses.
The first and most important step - don't wait.
"Get out and check out the damage," said John Krukemyer, Mid-Wood Incorporated's vice president of retail rental. "See if your trees are budding. If you feel comfortable pruning them out, great. If not, get someone out there to help you."
Unkempt and dead landscaping, if untreated, can lead to further damage like snow mold.

PERRYSBURG - Visitors to Eric Scott's home shouldn't be surprised that all of the clocks are blinking.
It isn't because the electricity is perpetually out. It's because Scott, who is a stewardship specialist for the Wood County Park District, likes to save electricity.
"A lot of times you leave things plugged in … they call it phantom electricity," he said. "Would you rather reset clocks or pay higher bills?"
Scott gave a presentation on green living last month at the Reuthinger Preserve off Oregon Road.
"Times are getting tough," he said, "and as a community leader, we felt we should put together a program to save money."

Wild about the windmill

Its facade is quickly recognized, but the inside of Bowling Green's "windmill house" is a mystery to many.
The square-footage isn't overwhelming, but the view is unique both inside and out.
The eye-catching windmill house is on the market for anyone looking for something a bit out of the ordinary. But you'll have to pay up for more than just the windmill itself, as it's packaged for sale with several apartment properties across Clough Street.
Built in 1939 from Dutch schematics as an interesting way to conceal an exposed boiler serving those other apartments, the windmill was never meant to function, though the blades were free to turn until being immobilized later, according to Steve Foraker, who said he's managed his family's properties including the windmill for 25 years.

These are the featured homes:
• The George Allen- Deb & Todd Kienzle Home, 2238 Scottwood Blvd. Built in 1892 by architect David L. Stine for  George Allen of Allen & Parkhurst, this home features a spectacular  entry with stained glass windows, original woodworking with fabulous  wood craftsmen artistry floors. Additional details include chandeliers, pocket doors, detail fret work, second-floor laundry, must see bathrooms and main and staff staircases.
• The Edward & Florence Scott Libbey Home, 2008 Scottwood Blvd. Built in 1895 by architect David L. Stine, this stunning home is a combination of shingle and colonial revival style. Porch perfection

Over the last half dozen years, Mike Foreman has spent time, on and off, in the Ankneys' historic Haskins Road home, remodeling bathrooms and the kitchen.
Little did he know that he'd spend this entire winter working in the home.
Foreman was first on the list of calls after a car went airborne the night of Jan. 15, striking Mark and Pat Ankney's home.
"She called me in the morning and she told me a car was in her porch," Foreman said.
The porch - one the Ankneys' favorite features in their home - was the focal point of the damage and the recovery, he said. 
"The front porch really saved it (the home) and took a big beating. It was damaged. I didn't see any repairs. I saw a brand new porch as soon as I walked on the job."
