Getting a home ready for winter should always include a visit from a licensed expert to give the furnace a tuneup, said Steve Fouts, president of United Home Comfort.
"It's a good way to detect gas leaks, carbon monoxide and dirt that can be a safety hazard," Fouts said. "Dirt can lead to delayed ignition and cause a fire,' he said.
Also important is for a resident to keep the area around a furnace free of combustible materials and make sure not to use a room where the furnace is located as a broom closet.
"Safety also extends to making sure there is a working carbon monoxide detector in the home," Fouts said.

It's getting darker earlier and boots and jackets are being busted out, which means winter is coming.
To prepare for the cold and snow, the Family Handyman editors have assembled these winterizing tips.
• Wiper blades: When you're driving and it's dumping snow, you want to be able to see through the windshield. Traditional blades can get packed with snow and cause limited visibility. Winter wiper blades are wrapped in a rubber boot that prevents ice and snow from sticking or packing, which makes for better visibility.
• Plumbing pipes: If you have a cabin or summer home not in use in the winter, it is important to shut off the water supply and drain all of the water from the pipes. In order to ensure that water actually drains fully, it is critical that faucets, tubs, sinks or any plumbing fixture are turned on. Pour nontoxic anti-freeze into any sink drain, shower drain or toilet to make sure there is no chance of water freezing.

The number of homes sold across Ohio increased 18.9 percent in September, as the market posted year-over-year gains in activity for the 27th consecutive month, according to the Ohio Association of Realtors.
"The Ohio housing market has taken another step forward in its continuing effort to overcome the economic challenges that shook the very foundation of the American Dream a few years ago," said OAR President Thomas J. Williams.
"The fact that we now posted 27 straight months of year-over-year sales gains - our longest stretch of uninterrupted in 16 years of tracking Ohio's sales activity - is a good indication that we're making progress in building a sustainable, growing marketplace. Equally important, there seems to be an appreciation among current and would-be home owners that, long-term, housing is a solid investment."
Sales through the first nine months of 2013 reached 99,585, a 17.7 percent increase from the 84,614 sales posted during the same period a year ago.

With temperatures dropping, now is the time to improve the home's energy efficiency. Drafty windows and doors can increase heating and cooling costs.
The typical American household spends $2,200 a year on energy bills, with nearly half spent on heating and cooling costs, according to Energy Star.
"Completing an annual home walk-around is a great way to check for potential maintenance needs and home improvements," said Kathy Krafka Harkema, spokesperson for Pella Windows and Doors. "Look for leaks, feel for drafts, and replace or repair worn or broken items to help avoid more costly damage."
What to look for:
• Inspect interior and exterior finishes and the space around them. Is the paint or stain in good condition? Signs of flaking and peeling, or water stains may mean that it's time to refinish or replace the window or door.

The Wood County Board of Realtors collected over 160 hats and pairs of gloves in November.
They were donated to the Salvation Army office in Bowling Green.
Local Realtors and business affiliates donated the items during the Nov. 13 WCBR membership luncheon at the Bowling Green Country Club.
Several events took place at the meeting.
After lunch there was the election of the 2014 slate of officers, and directors and pins were presented to the Realtors who qualified as top donors for the Ohio Realtor RPAC fund.
Jennifer Kephart, executive director for Habitat for Humanity, was the speaker for the meeting.
She shared Habitat's vision for helping families get into homes of their own, emphasizing that families who helped with housing go through lengthy interviews and classes with the goal being to "support sustainable and transformational development."

With winter already rearing its snowy head, one's mind naturally turns to cold-weather pursuits.
Cocoa by the fireside. Building snowmen. Ice skating. And, of course, household projects.
With people likely to spend less time indoors as the snow flies and the wind whips around, wintertime can prove a valuable opportunity for homeowners to undertake projects that can add value to their residences.
The projects can be anything from improving the look of your home to cutting down on utility bills.
"They update some of their painting and that's when they clean their cabinets," and make other plans, said Carol Tolles, manager of Ace Hardware in Bowling Green.
Kim Beach, an interior designer with Homeworks Decorating Center, also noted that interior painting can be done in the winter, including "just getting things up to date and refresh some things."

The Hayes Presidential Center can help you give voice to your home's walls with its Tracing Your House's History class.
Head Librarian Becky Hill is instructor for the 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday session in the Hayes Museum.
